University of Tokyo Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship 2024 (Fully Funded)

Application is invited to apply for the University of Tokyo Recommended Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship 2024. This is a fully funded Japanese scholarship program for international students to undertake master’s and Ph.D. degrees.

Eligibility Criteria

International students from around the world from any country that has diplomatic relations with Japan.

Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1985.

Applicants must apply for the field of study they studied at the previous university or a related field.

Holds an English proficiency test score equivalent to B2 or above on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) scale (e.g. TOEFL iBT 72 or above, IELTS 5.5 or above).

Has completed an educational program whose primary language of instruction is English that satisfies the entrance requirements to the Master’s Program or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo.

Period of Scholarships

For a recipient who will enroll in a Master’s Program or Doctoral Program, the scholarship will be payable for the standard period of time necessary for the recipient to complete his or her program (standard course term), starting from October 2024.

Master’s Program = October 2024 – September 2026 (2 years)

Doctoral Program = October 2024 – September 2027 (3 years)

Scholarship Benefits

Allowance: The amounts of the monthly stipend for AY2024 have yet to be determined. As an example, the monthly amounts for AY2023 will be presented below. (These amounts are subject to change depending on the size of the annual fiscal budget each year, commodity prices, etc.)

AY2023 actual amounts144,000 yen/month (for a student of a Master’s Program), or 145,000 yen/month (for a student of a Doctoral Program)

(an additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be added to those students undertaking study or research in some designated regions of the country).

  • Official Academic Transcripts from both undergraduate and graduate schools (Originals or Certified copies)
  • Certificate of Graduation or Provisional Certificate from both undergraduate and graduate schools (Originals or Certified copies)
  • Abstract of Thesis (if completed) or a description of your thesis research in progress
  • Proof of high performance or good achievement record
  • Recommendation Letter
  • Photograph
  • Certificate of language proficiency
  • CV (Any Format but, it must include all of your academic and employment history.)
  • Photocopy of your passport
