Indian women are designed to be caretakers of the home and they’ve always been recognised by the world as elementary, sympathetic, compliant type of women, clad in a saree with long hair and jewellery who likes to stay in the house, taking care of her family and fulfilling all their needs. Being at home is a lot more work but god designed women to manage it all with grace. As the scenarios are changing, one or the other women is breaking these stereotypes and the patterns bound for women.
They are proving themselves to be independent, capable, strong and multi-faceted. Taking care of their family, they’re also working and inspiring thousands of the people to live their dream and make themselves independent. They are an inspiration to how one can manage onself between household and job.
The following are the profiles of some influential women of modern India who are trying to make the best of them and are an inspiration to youth:
1) Kavita Shukla
Kavita is the Founder & CEO of The FRESHGLOW Co. and the inventor of FRESHPAPER, a simple innovation at a very young age of 29 taking on the massive global challenge of food waste. Kavita holds a BA from Harvard University and has Indian nationality. Her story of simple beginnings, beliefs, and empowerment was the subject for a Hollywood director for his short films.
Today, freshpaper is used by farmers and families across the world which keeps the produce fresh for longer hours than today’s methods.
She holds four patents and is the youngest woman ever to receive the biennial INDEX Design to Improve Life Award – the world’s largest prize for design. She has also received several milestones like INDEX DESIGN TO IMPROVE LIFE AWARD: The World’s Largest Prize in Design, FORBES 30 UNDER 30 LIST: Social Entrepreneurs, HARVARD ALUMNI ELEVATE COMPETITION AWARD FOR CHANGE, INTEL INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR FIRST PLACE AWARD and many more.
2) Priyanka Paul
Priyanka,19, is a brilliant teenage artist and outspoken activist from who has experienced success on a global level. She has a fresh perspective on what it means to be a woman. Her artwork highlights women of color and shatters the status quo.
Her artwork is a dedication towards women who face inequality or discrimination through which she tries to bring forward the issues and help them overcome with it. She explores the aesthetic of Goddesses from around the world and reimagined them as modern day women. The modern goddesses she renders are beautiful, spunky and unashamed of their body.
She is fiercely honest in the way she projects herself towards society, in terms of inspiring and encouraging many others and accepting themselves and others. She is even featured in various magazines followed by the Paper magazine recently where she mentions about growing up in an environment where being gay is a illusion. She also pins open thoughts regarding sexuality etc.
3) Trisha Shetty
Trisha Shetty is an UN leader, feminist, Indian activist of 30 for gender equity and the founder of SheSays. She is from Mumbai and is known for human rights advocacy, especially advocating for gender-sensitive policies and law, quality education, youth and gender representation and preventing sexual violence in India.
SheSays is a youth led NGO which focuses on youth and civil society engagement to promote gender equality. It functions in the domains of Sexual Violence; Education; Healthcare and Sanitation; Security and Public Policy etc. And here itself she renders her service towards equality in the country.
Shetty was named one of India’s “7 Most Powerful Warriors” by India Today and was one of the honourees of the Vogue India Woman of the Year Award. She was also inducted as one of the 12 Obama Foundation Scholars at Columbia University in the inaugural batch.
4) Akansha Deo Sharma
Akansha Sharma is a visual artist from New Delhi. At the age of 29 she is the only Indian designer at IKEA and uses Indian textile history, handicrafts and construction techniques to make minimal, playful products.
An industrial designer, a textile innovator , she is the first, and only, Indian hire and the youngest designer at furniture and home accessories. She motivates other people to come up with their creativity and skills and showcase their talent to the world freely and openly without any hesitation.
She is a designer having specialisation in Indian textiles, workind heavily with structure, construction, pattern, fabric manipulations and the technique of dyeing and printing. Her alter ego explores mixed media like photography, collage, illustration, audio, and video. This is why she likes to travel and get acquainted with new surroundings, cultures, tastes and smells; it inspires her design process. She is currently working on Ikea’s India launch collection and exploring the various cultures to expand horizons.
5) Palak Shah
The 28 year old is the chief executive officer of Ekaya, a handcrafted modern sari label. After graduating from university in 2012, she co- founded the label with her father in Mumbai. Since, Ekaya has collaborated with brands such as Ferragamo and Missoni.
Her journey has been a fulfilling one. She has worked for hours to achieve her dream and thus inspired others by sharing that one can never get bored of doing what they love. If you dare to achieve you can.
Palak has featured on Forbes Asia 30 under 30 artist list for 2019. Palak is now focused on propagating the versatility and global appeal of Indian heritage weaves. She is a very confident woman who dreamed to achieve beyond ‘Traditional’ customs.
6) Priya Prakash
She is the founder and CEO of Health Set Go from Gurgaon, Haryana. She started this because she was bullied for being overweight as a child which led her to set up the company to provide health programmes in school.
In this scenario, being fit is so important as it also improves health and reduces risk of developing several diseases. Priya helps and spreads awareness regarding fitness which motivates people for their health and healthy living. She had to suffer from the issue of bullying and thus she wants to make others not be a part of something like this.
Recently she has won the coveted Cisco Youth Leadership Award 2019 at the Global Citizen Prize awards, at Royal Albert Hall, London. HealthSetGo holds check-up camps at schools throughout India catering to all strata of society to detect/diagnose any disease, and even administers vaccinations.
7) Sai Gole
Sai gole, 26, the co-founder of BharatAgri from Pune, India. She was passionate about start-ups and everything around it. Thus, she founded a company named Bharat Agri with a dream of designing technology solutions for the unorganised sector.
Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for around 60% of the country’s population. However, these past few years, our country was facing a variety of problems related to farming and thus, Sai Gole and Siddharth Dialani together with the technology brought a change into it. The startup is a simple technology for farmers to improve their productivity. And as of now with this invention the agricultural sector of the country is improving and it’s a motivation to various people to support farmers for our lives.
8) Deepanjali Dalmia
Deepanjali Dalmia, 26, who took the leap of faith by quitting her job with Ernest and Young in New York and decided to work for women’s health in Delhi, India.
Deepanjali is an inventor of ‘Hey day’ a biodegradable and organic sanitary napkin brand made of corn and bamboo fibre. She found Heyday when she was researching the personal hygiene market in India and realised about the undergoing crisis in India. She made an invention which helps both women and nature.
Driven by the knowledge that many sanitary napkins contain plastics, bleaches and other toxins which can lead to cervical cancer, urinary infections and allergies, the Columbia University graduate researched plant-based alternatives. She has also featured under Forbes India magazine
9) Karishma Sahani Khan
Karishma is a young designer from Pune, Maharashtra. She is a fashion graduate from the prestigious LONDON COLLEGE OF FASHION. She believes in keeping everything simple, vivid, and unique.
Her label ka/sha was launched in 2011 focusing on multicultural using varying techniques and material.Her brand aims to increase fair trade and benefit artists. The designer has also showcased herself in lakme fashion week and many others. She is an inspiration for many who think choosing a career as a designer isn’t broad.
In the year 2010 Sahani’s graduation collection won the best surface textiles collection award of the year.
10) Deepa Karmakar
Deepa, 26, is a young gymnast. She first got attention when she won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth games. She has represented India at the Summer olympics in 2016, becoming the first Indian female gymnast to represent the country at international level.
She has worked for hours to make her capable of showcase herself with her performance and skills. She has also received Arjuna Award in 2016.
All over she encourages women to not stop oneself and work hard on it until they achieve.
